Privacy Policy
Expensa ("we", "our", or "us") is dedicated to protecting your privacy and security. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, process, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application. By installing or using Expensa, you agree to the terms described in this policy.
🔒 Privacy First Design: Expensa is built around an offline-first architecture. Your personal transaction records, wallet balances, budget targets, and financial analytics remain stored locally on your device and are never sold, rented, or transmitted to commercial marketing servers.
1. SMS Ingestion & Financial Transaction Tracking
To automate expense logging and eliminate manual entry friction, Expensa offers an optional Auto-Ingest Bank SMS Expenses feature. If explicitly enabled by you, Expensa requests SMS access permissions (RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS) subject to the following strict privacy principles:
- Strict Financial Filtering: Expensa reads incoming SMS messages solely to parse transaction alerts sent by financial institutions and banks (e.g., debit/credit alerts, UPI notifications from HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Paytm, etc.). Personal SMS conversations, login alerts, and non-financial messages are ignored.
- 100% On-Device Local Processing: SMS message body parsing and entity extraction (amount, vendor/merchant, transaction date) are performed 100% locally on your phone using a native Machine Learning engine.
- Zero Server Uploads: Your SMS content, sender details, and bank alert texts are NEVER transmitted, uploaded, stored, or shared with external servers, cloud AI providers, or third parties.
- Explicit Opt-In & Revocation: SMS Auto-Ingestion is disabled by default. You must explicitly toggle it ON in the Account tab, and you can revoke SMS permissions at any time via Android System Settings.
2. Permissions and Data Usage
To support advanced financial utilities, Expensa requests the following device permissions when you explicitly activate corresponding features:
- SMS Permissions (
RECEIVE_SMS, READ_SMS): Used exclusively for local bank transaction alert parsing when the Auto-Ingest feature is enabled by the user.
- Camera: Used to capture images of paper bills or receipts for OCR expense extraction and to scan QR codes for local Wi-Fi peer-to-peer ledger sync and UPI settlements.
- Microphone (Audio): Used for hands-free voice command expense entry ("Spent ₹500 on Food"). Audio recordings are processed on-device and never saved or transmitted.
- Contacts (
READ_CONTACTS): Used solely to let you select contact names for Group Expense Splitting (Splitwise-style) and sharing payment settlement summaries via WhatsApp.
- Notifications (
POST_NOTIFICATIONS): Used to deliver local reminders for bill due dates, daily expense logging alerts, budget threshold warnings, and auto-tracked expense confirmations.
- Google Accounts & Storage: Used solely to enable optional Cloud Sync with your personal Google Drive account and to export/import database backups locally.
- Biometrics / Fingerprint: Used locally by Android OS hardware to unlock secure access to Expensa. Biometric data is managed by the OS and is completely inaccessible to Expensa.
- Exact Alarm (
SCHEDULE_EXACT_ALARM): Used to schedule precise notification reminders for EMI due dates and utility bill payments.
3. Group Expense Splitting & Debt Settlement
When using the Group Expense Splitting feature to divide bills with friends, roommates, or trip members:
- All group ledgers, expense allocations, and simplified debt calculations are stored locally on your device.
- UPI payment links (
upi://pay) and QR codes generated for debt settlements are created locally on your phone.
- Settlement summaries shared via WhatsApp or SMS are transmitted directly through your phone's native apps at your instruction.
4. Tax Planner & PDF Summary Reports
Expensa includes an on-device Tax Planner tool that calculates Old vs. New Tax Regime liabilities and generates Tax Summary PDF reports:
- Tax calculations and SIP 80C estimations are computed locally on your device.
- Exported PDF reports are saved directly to your phone's public
Documents/Wallet/ directory or Scoped MediaStore storage.
5. Cloud Synchronization & Local Wi-Fi Sync
Expensa offers two optional sync mechanisms:
- Google Drive Cloud Sync: Your encrypted transaction database is saved into a private, app-specific folder in your own personal Google Drive account. Only you have access to this backup folder.
- Local Wi-Fi P2P Sync: Allows syncing data between your own devices over a local Wi-Fi network via an embedded local server. Data travels directly across your local network and never passes through the internet.
6. Subscriptions and Payments
Premium features and subscriptions are managed securely via Google Play Billing. Expensa does not collect, process, or store credit card numbers, debit card details, or banking passwords.
7. Data Security, Retention, and Deletion
We employ industry-standard encryption and local database security to safeguard your financial ledger. Your data remains stored on your device for as long as the application is installed.
You can delete all your stored financial data at any time by clearing the application storage in Android Settings, or by choosing the Delete Account / Delete Data option in the app.
